The Intra Exhibition 2015 was held from 4th to 6th Dec. 2015. This is a blog of everything that went before during and after the exhibition. This time we decided to go with only three themes. The themes were: 1. Landscape and Cityscapes. 2. Street Photography. 3. Nature Photography. The exhibition was open to everyone associated with IISc, and its sister institutes, NCBS, JNCASR, ICTS, RRI. Lot of new members had joined the club this year after the very successful Basic photography Training session. It was wonderful to see so many new and enthusiastic faces. So the old folks of the club decided also to have a separate Fresher's Contest integrated in the main event. We thought it will engage and motivate the new members of the club. The obi-wan kanobi of the group, Aviruk Lahiri, who is the oldest and wisest of the group was naturally selected to be the first judge for the Fresher's contest. Apart from him, the ever technical Manuj Mukherjee and the most balanced guy, Shounak Roy, was the other two judges. There was a good deal of submissions from the new members, with photographs ranging to every genre of photography. After some analysis, keeping in mind of the content, framing and exposure of each of the photos, they decided the winners which is shown below. Winner of the Fresher's Contest. Shot by Pratik Sarkar . from the CSA dept. He joined as a Master's Student in the CSA department in 2015. The main beauty about shot, is the colorful squares which appears just like a strip from a medium format slide film. The person in the bottom very clearly balances the overall image. 1st Runner up of the Fresher's Contest. Shot by Prateek Kumar Vishwakarma. He is a first year integrated PhD student in the Mathematics department. He took this shot in one of practical training sessions by the club. This is a wonderful shot, bought out nicely by exposure and framing. 2nd Runner up of the Fresher's Contest. Shot by Tobias. He is a exchange student from Germany. He attended a semester in IISc, in the CSA deptartment. This is a very serene shot. A very nice candid moment of a family. The photograph is very nicely framed, with proper exposure, giving a sense of peace and tranquility. Special Mention to Tuhin Chakravarti. He is a first year student in Aerospace department. This is a macro shot of a flower. The exposure is perfect which gives a very nice fee of the overall image. Now we move on to the main event. The main event comprised of a panel of esteemed judges. Rajesh Bhattacharjee was select as the curator for the theme Landscape and Cityscape. He is a landscape photographer based in USA. He was always fascinated by the treasures nature has offered us and cherished those moments he spent in the lofty heights of the Himalayas during his hiking trips. He bought his first film SLR to capture those magical moments during his Himalayan journeys. After moving to USA he took up landscape photography seriously and since then it has been a pleasurable and adventurous journey through the wilderness of numerous national and state parks of United States. Rajesh’s work has been published in magazines and websites like Dpreview, Landscape photography magazine, Smart Photography and Better Photography. Check out his work in https://www.flickr.com/photos/rajesh_b/ Arindam Thokder was selected as the curator of the theme Street Photography. He is a Bangalore based street photographer with a keen sense for contrast and color. An Exchange Administrator by profession, his main interests are documenting social issues and conflicts, charitable aid and travel and cultures of various parts of India. But it is street photography that inspires him the most. He is also one of the valuable members of the Street photography Collective called Thats Life. Find his work in http://www.thatslife.in/tl_members/arindam-thokder/ Prasenjeet Yadav was selected as the curator of the theme Nature. He is a Bangalore based nature and wildlife photographer. A lot of his childhood was spent exploring the forests of central India, where he familiarized himself with the behaviour of wildlife, under the guidance of village elders whose vast real experience was a source of many anecdotes on wildlife. A molecular ecologist by profession, Prasenjeet realized his true calling in storytelling via the medium of photography. His stories have resulted in better understanding of the effects of climate change in Sikkim Himalayas and effects of windmills in surrounding eco-systems. Since 2014, Prasenjeet is a National Geographic Young Explorer covering the Shola forests of the Western Ghats. Check out some of his work in http://www.prasenjeetyadav.com/ The judges were quite overwhelmed with the number of submissions they received for judging. They sorted out top 30 from their respective themes. We printed out top 20 from each theme, and displayed in our gallery. We can't thank them enough to take time out of their busy schedules and help us out in our endeavor. After getting the results from the judges, it was our time to get started on the printing process. The entire printing process was handed out to Sangram and Aviruk. The photographs was printed by PRO LAB. They did a amazing job in printing all the photographs in a matter of 2 hours!! Check out their website: http://prolab.in/. Then came the hardest part. Putting up the prints! We decided to make frames out of thermocol and black chart paper for each photograph. As a added bonus, we also celebrated Sangram's birthday. We laid out the photographs on the floor to decide the order in which they will be displayed. Then we started putting up the prints. One of the guy was pasting it on the wall, while others checking if they were level. It was a boring but important job. We wouldn't want to hang a tilted photo! Lot of people came to our exhibition. Even Arindam Thokder, who was the curator of street photography theme, also came to see our exhibition and sat down with us. All the members were very much excited to interact with him. Diwali is a busy time for us. Lot of events happen in IISc during this time of the year. We covered four major events this time. They are as follows: Rangmanch Showcase Like every year Rangmanch, the drama club of IISc, graced us with a collage of four different plays. Every one of them was done with utmost sincerity and grace. The plays were, Khuda Hafiz, The Game, A perfect day for banana fish, and Papad. We present few photos from the showcase. Rhythmica Diwali Show Rhythmica is the music group of IISc. This was their second show this year. It was a wondeful show comprising of music from classical, to heavy metal and also a bit of fusion here and there. Some photos from the show. Diwali Street Art Festival This was a one of a kind event held in IISc, organized by IFF. This event included exchange of art, rangoli, and ofcourse street food. We hope to see them do something similar next time. Some photographs from the event. Hindi Samiti Diwali Festival
As always Hindi Samiti did a wonderful job in organizing lighting of diyas, and sky lanterns in front of the main building in IISc. Check out some of the photographs from the event. So here we are acting as lecturers to the young enthusiasts, whence not long ago the current lecturers were students themselves. The first lecture was taken by the elderly Manuj Mukherjee and Shounak Roy. The topic was “Basics of Photography”. The lecture was crisp, to the point and by the end of it several students were confused as to whether clap in appreciation or chant “Heil Manuj”. The second lecture was taken by the ever confused Subham Dutta Chowdhury. The topic was on exposure. This involved a novel demonstration of the Adobe Lightroom-camera interface for demonstrating the reciprocity triangle. Overall it was a satisfactory exposure..err..lecture. The first practical session was held in the IISC campus. The interested students were divided into five groups with assigned group leaders and given a practical demonstration in exposure handling. The third lecture in the series was again taken by Manuj Mukherjee. This demonstrated the use of filters and flash followed by the practical session at the Nandi hills. Club members and enthusiastic participants ensured it was a grand success, irrespective of a sleep deprived night journey. The final and the most important lecture was taken care of by the club legends Sangram Biswas and Bishnu Sanghai. The topic that they covered was Composition. Enthusiasts were awe struck as the aesthetic beauty of the subject was revealed to them during the course of the lecture and were relieved to see that not all old hands of the club are out of shape. The final practical session was held at ShivajiNagar and Yeshwantpur market. The same batches went for the trip as the previous practical sessions and were exposed to the nitty-gritties of street photography.
We, of course, are above all these and hence we set up our stall outside the main auditorium. On a serious note, we would like to thank the Students' Council for providing us with a platform to interact with people interested in learning the art of photography. Also we would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude towards Gymkhana for presenting our club in the event. We, of course, covered the event "willingly". The documentation can be accessed here , here, here, here, here aaaaannnd here (please don't judge us on this, we are photographers not tech-wizards). Every year Photography Club, IISc organizes Intra exhibitions to encourage the entire IISc community to participate and showcase their talent. The one hosted in April was no exception.
We are also very much obliged to the IISc Students' Council for providing us with an excellent room for hosting the exhibition. Now for the fun part. So we started putting up the prints.... ....some of us surely did more than that of course. Well you get the idea. Three days of exhibition whizzed past with appreciable footfall and feed backs. Shortage of time and resources never dampened the spirit of the club members who ensured that in the end, every thing went smoothly. Last but not the least, no event is complete without the awesome group photo.
